Short post tonight because it’s 1:00 AM and we leave for home in a few short hours. Was a good last day of work: we painted two garage doors at one house and a deck at another.
After work we had dinner at the church and then enjoyed a Detroit Tigers baseball game downtown. They played the Colorado Rockies and won 4-2. After the game there was a spectacular fireworks show that was the real highlight of the day!
Once we made it through post-game traffic back to the church, we spent two hours cleaning the downstairs bathrooms, hallways and fellowship hall so that we can rise early and head out tomorrow. It’s been a wonderful mission trip, and we’re ready to come home!
Today was a day of detail work. We spent our time at two houses, and did painting jobs at each one. The first was a continuation of a job from yesterday: painting the screened-in porch that we’d started with the wrong paint. It was slow going, especially on the ceiling, because the wood was untreated and soaked up all the paint. At several points it seemed impossible, but by the time we ran out of paint the place looked really good.
The second job was painting security doors on a really nice house in another neighborhood. The doors were beautiful with very intricate designs, and consequently it took forever to paint them. They looked great, but it was difficult to appreciate them because we were so tired and sore.
We came back to the church feeling pretty grouchy. Everyone was exhausted and a little grumpy, so we spent some time either napping or reading. Then we ate a delicious dinner and went upstairs to the church sanctuary for a short service of prayer and song led by people from Northwestern Christian Church. During that service the music was uplifting and the preacher talked about Galatians 6:9: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we don’t give up (NIV).” It was exactly the word we needed to hear, and we walked away from worship feeling more energetic.
We’re doing good work here, and while that work is sometimes exhausting, we won’t grow weary because we know that all of us encounter God when we come together in service! Tomorrow is our last work day here in Detroit, so we’re really going to make it count…and that means we need to rest up tonight. We’ll check in again tomorrow!
